Helsinki, the capital of the happiest country in the world, is a European pioneer in sustainable urban development. Sustainable solutions are not only environmentally friendly and energy-efficient in Helsinki, but they are also made of citizen wellbeing, equality and functional everyday life.

Jump on a bike from the city’s bicycle-sharing system and enjoy a ride to a resident-organized block party in one of the city’s dynamic neighbourhoods, breathing clean air as you pedal. Monitor your home’s energy consumption on your smartphone. Take your children to the local day care centre by foot. Ride the Metro to a free-of-charge workspace provided by the City. Relax after work by weeding the urban garden of your housing company, or by bathing with friends in one of Helsinki’s many public saunas.

Cities as global problem solvers

The global problems of the future are solved in cities. Helsinki is a prime example of the problem solving capabilities of cities: we tackle challenges by testing novel approaches boldly with citizens.

Sustainable urban development is not empty promises in Helsinki. Sustainable solutions are environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, and they are also socially sustainable. A sustainable city strengthens equality, wellbeing and opportunities for public participation among citizens.

Towards carbon-neutral Helsinki

As the first city in Europe, Helsinki is committed to voluntary local review and reporting to the UN on its implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Helsinki is also committed to rendering the city carbon neutral by 2035. Finns are known for keeping their promises. The work to reach carbon neutrality is already underway in Helsinki. We will make it happen!

We invite you to read these pages and to find out how sustainable urban development can be seen in everyday life in Helsinki!
